Honestly, I wasn't to thrilled at the ending of the book because it left to many questions. It's so open ended that anything could happen, which is a good and bad thing. Thankfully there are two more books to read in the trilogy so hopefully they tie up the loose endings of this book.
I think this book was chosen as a recipient of the gateway book award because it's so unique. It expands your mind and makes you think. The society in this book is so different from our reality that it forces us to wonder, "What if our life was like that?" Also the emotion the author creates with the characters is outstanding. We as readers feel connected on a deeper level.

After continuing to read this book i think there are a lot of added paragraphs that arn't necessarily for the book as if she needed a lot of filler to finish it. which isn't bad just something i realized. i also find the civilization pretty interesting with the limit on their age and other rules from the government they really are forced to do a lot in their lives that they shouldn't have to do and it kind of annoys me cause the government shouldn't be able to run their lives.

I definitely agree with you. The government shouldn't control every body's lives. I also think it wouldn't be as bad if you actually grew up in that type of society. They most likely don't think all that much about it (except Cassia and Ky). We are already adapted to our government, so we think others aren't as good, or acceptable.

So far this book is set in a friendly environment where the government is in control of absolutely everything. Everyone seems completely ok with that. So far I have gotten no sense of freedom from this book. The main character seems to fit in perfectly with this no-freedom government which is disappointing.

I also have a problem with the point of this entire book because if there is something to be learned so far I cant see where they're going with it. But I'm hoping by near the ending or the end it will have a clear lesson for me to see, or maybe I could be able to piece together the lesson.

The settting of the book is set in a environment where the government has all control over the citizens. The citizens have no true freedom. They are controlled by everything they do. So many rules to follow such as not being able to run outside, not being able to pick your patner in life, and not being able to pick your own job. I predict that there will be a revoult in the society. Eventually everyone will get sick of having to follow these ridiculous rule they have to follow.

Everything seems to be going well for everyone under the governments control. Cassia is living her life as she did everyday, one of the best sorters, her up comming birthday, and matching. She trusted the government and everything they stood for. Her matching was on her birthday and she was excited more than ever before, until something goes wrong the next day. She gets matched with her best friend, xander, and things go wrong. She begins to think the government has made a mistake.

Matched setting is in a civilization in the future. In this civilization the government controls what everyone does and is very strict. There are many rules that the society has like their is a curfew for everyone in town, no one can pick who they are going to marry, the society has to give everyone their jobs and they cant even run outside. The main character is completely okay with the society and trusts it. But then she discovers that the society made a mistake and that she can not fully trust it anymore so, i believe that she will try to leave.

In a society where you don't get to choose who you marry Cassia is turning 16 and she is having her match ceremony. Her best friend Xander is having his too and they end up getting matched together. When Cassia goes home to watch Xanders micro chip another boy that isn't Xander flashes on the screen. Cassia only tells one person about what happened with Xanders micro chip and thats her grandpa.

Matched has been consistently interesting. When it is time to put the book down, I just want to keep reading, because the futuristic setting is so detailed. For Cassia and everybody around her, the norm is food portioned to everyone through the government, and timed deaths. Cassia seems like she has had life pretty good, but is now starting to see the cracks in the community plans for everybody's lives.

If I had to adapt to a community like this, I dont think I'd be very comfortable, especially if I would have to marry someone that I don't know.

My character Cass, in Matched seems like an outgoing teenage girl. I see that right now at the first chapters of the book, that she doesnt have much freedom going on for her nor is she looking for it. Shes a genuine curious person, her curiosity peeks out a few times in this book about her match and other things. But it looks like shes accepted most of whats going on in this government unlike how I would, but she grew up in it so that's probably why. To be honest, I don't really like this character as she shows no hero sense which I've come to adore in a character.

I feel like all the characters personalities are manipulated by the society. Cassia gives off a vibe of curiosity but since the society doesn't make mistakes she can't feed her curiosity by finding answers. Ky is troubled by whatever is happening in the outer provinces but the society would take care of him if he talked about it to anybody.

The main character in Matched is Cassia. She's curious but tries following the rules. Her best friend got matched to her but when she looked at the microchip that was supposed to have Xander's, her match, information on it, it showed someone else. Now she doesn't really know who her match is. Cassia is following all the rules and is doing what she's supposed to. Her grandpa told her it's okay to wonder and now she's curious all the time. I think Cassia should keep following the rules and not wonder about Ky (the guy who also appeared on the chip). If something is meant to happen, it'll happen on it's own. Cassia needs to be happy that she was matched with her best friend. Any other girl would kill to be her and she needs to accept that Xander is her match and that Ky was a mistake.

I agree that she should lay low and not try to create something with Ky, and just let it happen how it will happen. I also think she should continue to wonder about other stuff, though, so she doesn't just become non-existent in a community where everybody blends in. She should be curious under the radar, so it looks like she is following the rules, and doesn;t get caught.

I disagree. I think Cassia is able to change the society as a whole. I think with her mind she is capable is letting people know there is a different way to live their lives. And, if she thinks she would be happier with Ky, rather than Xander, then she should follow her heart and go with she thinks is right, not with what the society and ofiicals tell her is “right”.

So basically the Society has decided that brainwashing everyone is better than being trusted by people that can think and have their own ideas. So I believe that Cassia's curiosity will overcome whatever the Society has done to keep people from asking questions. Cassia runs a lot because it clears her mind

The main characters name is Cassia. She follows all of the rules that the community has made. When she got matched with her best friend Xander things start to get weird. She goes back and looks back at the video of the matching and does not see Xander's face. Instead she is surprised to see a boy she is familiar with named Ky. This is strange because the society never makes mistakes. Cassia is starting to question the society.

The main character in this story is named Cassie. She is very curious about the society yet still follows the rules and believes in them. Even when they made a mistake with her match she still trusted the society. I do not like the fact that she is so trusting with the society. The character she was matched with who happened to be her best friend is named Xander. Cassie describes Xander as a very brave and handsome boy. Cassie and Xander talk about everything together and like each other very much.

I feel like all the characters are manipulated by the society. Cassia is curious but the society is exceptional in the hiding of information. Ky is worried about whatever is going on in the outer provinces. Despite everything that is going on in the society, Cassia's curiosity will be the bane of her existence at the end of it all. The story itself seems to have no real meaning and is just a senseless way to burn time and I'm hoping this book will end with some closer to the unexplained events in this book.

    Part 1

Matched is set in the future time where peopled named "The Society" rule like a government. The community Cassia has lived in for the past sixteen years is very strict with certain rules and a set time for everything; including death. When you turn sixteen you are matched with the man or woman you will marry and have kids with but you have no choice on who it is, unless your a single, then you stay alone forever. The type of world Cassia lives in is very new, there are air trains that ride on literally nothing, you breakfast, lunch and dinner gets sent to you by an Official. Every move you make and everything you do, you are being watched by an official.

Matched is full of new exciting things happening at almost every moment. Its full of mysteries and unanswered questions. Cassia was matched with her best friend Xander, she thought it was the best thing to happen until the Society made a "mistake". Now shes not sure if her match was Xander or Ky, the quiet full of secrets boy who was adopted and moved here from another city. I think it's very interesting that Cassia is starting to fall for Ky who she doesn't even barely know, Yet there is some connection going on. I think Cassia should keep searching for answers to see who she really was supposed to be matched with.

Although I believe that there could be a spark between Cassia and Ky, I believe that it should NOT be pursued because there could be terrible repercussions for what they could do, or even think of doing. They could get in some serious trouble for even thinking of eachother, so they need to knock it off. Cassia is practically already taken.

The effect that the setting has on the charter has changed the whole book. For example, she never would have burned the poem if she weren’t in a dystopia. Even in a less controlled society. She would not have destroyed the poems, she would have known that they were never going to find it, that her grandpa had hidden it for who knows how long and she would have been fine if she had kept the paper, if it were I, I would have hidden the poem until I was killed and even then I would have passed it down to my grandchild (or husband if I were to die first)

In the book Matched the setting is in the future where the city is ruled completely by “the society” that has made this city perfect in their eyes. The control everything from who you are matched with to marry, where you live, how you live, what kind of job you have, when and what you eat, and when you die. The main character in this book is Cassia. She’s a sixteen year old girl who is starting question the word in which she lives. She doesn't agree completely with the lifestyle in which she was given. My reaction in being put in this kind of environment would be unsettling. I wouldn't like not having control over all the aspects of my life. I would more than likely be reacting like Cassia is.

The setting of this book makes the entire story. Because of the order and strictness of this society, Cassia has been taught to think more logically, and not necessarily think for herself, or have her own real opinions. She has chosen to destroy her grandfather’s poems because of the fear the society has instilled in her. If I had to adapt to this kind of society I don’t think I would make it through. There is too much control over its citizens, and since I am used to having so much freedom, it would be too hard to give it all away.

So I'm reading this book and im pretty far ahead. Right now this book makes me really mad, the characters just kind of tear me down. But about the conflicts in this book I suppose the major ones are Cassia and the society. Its more of an internal conflict. It doesn't show outwardly but because of the society, she was forced to destroy her grandfather's poems that ment so much to her. I doubt she actually wanted to destroy them. And not to mention that her grandfather died because of the society which so far she fails to blame them for when it was completely their doing. I think she just hasn't found the courage to blame them yet because the societies immorality, she grew up around it. Its hard to question your way of life.

There are a few conflicts in the book Matched. The biggest one at the moment is Cassia and who to believe is her match. She doesn't know whether it's Ky or whether it's Xander. She wants to believe Xander is her match but she can't help wondering about Ky. And then there's the fact that she's carrying around poems and she shouldn't be carrying them around. She wants to get rid of them but she thinks they're too beautiful to get rid of. Cassia doesn't know what to do about her match and her accidental match. She doesn't know whether she wants to be with Xander or Ky. It looks to me that Cassia and Xander have been best friends forever but she seems really comfortable around Ky. I like following the rules so I don't get into trouble. If I were in her position, I would go with Xander. Only because it's what the society told her to do.

Madisson D, I agree with your conflict that Cassia is not for sure who her Match is, when she thought it was all perfect that she was matched with her best friend and then realizes that maybe that wasn't who she was actually suppose to be with. Also that maybe the Society made a mistake for the first time that she knows of, who knows what else they have done.

There are two conflicts within this story Cassia v. herself, Cassia v. The Society. The conflict against herself is her attachment to Xander and Ky. She loves both of them but the society has her backed up to a wall with only one way out. She could either choose Ky and fight the society or choose Xander and go on as usual. Her conflict against the society is about the reason why everything is this way, the actual reason. she thinks people should choose for themselves instead of everything being done for them and being watched all the time with all your data being collected.

A conflict in the story that Cassia has is that she likes Xander and Ky and she doesnt know which one to choose or which one is really right for her. Being with Xander would be easy because they've been bestfriends since they were little, but being with Ky would be complicated. Another conflict in the story is that Cassia is starting to wonder about her society and if they really never make mistakes because of the mistake they made with the micro chip.

Cassie is now having conflict with herself and the society. She wants to be in love with Xander but cant help but have feelings for Ky. She doesn't trust in the society as much as she used to. She cant be with Ky because he is supposed to be single and if she wants to she will have to leave the society. What I disagree with is how Cassia burned the poems. She did it because she was scared of what would happen if the officials or anyone found it. The society she lives in, they only have 100 poems that are legal for people to have or read. They do this because they want to keep everyone’s knowledge the same and limited so no one gets ideas to rebel against them. I think it’s wrong because she could have done something different with her life. She could have passed it on to her grandchildren and her children. She could have changed the whole society and got other people to go along with her and make a society where there aren’t rules like they have. I would suggest that she would have kept it in her compact because it’s been in there since she got it from her grandmother and no one has found it yet. So, if she didn’t make a big deal out of it like she did she could have still kept.

I disagree most with Cassia’s decision to burn the poems. She only burned them out of fear, and in my opinion that’s like bowing down to the society. I think she should stand up for herself and do what she thinks is right. If it were me, I would have put the poems back into the compact and hid the compact away from everyone. Although it was the safest thing to do, she shouldn’t have burned them because of how much the poems meant to her. There may have been a much deeper meaning to them that her Grandpa wanted her to see.

The most important conflict in Matched is Cassia thinks that maybe she was supposed to be matched with Ky instead of her perfect match Xander. She cant help but wonder what it would be like to be matched with Ky instead of Xander. This is important to the plot because her fantasy for Ky could change her outlook on The Society and the rest of the world, maybe it was meant for her and Ky to be matched so she could figure out the truth her grandfather already knew. I think that Cassia should go against the rules of the Society and uncover everything that Ky knows even if it gets in between her and Xander. Maybe she was meant to be with Ky and they are suppose to reveal everything no one is even aware that's going on.

The main conflict of Matched is a love conflict between Cassia, Ky, and Xander, even though Xander doesn't know that Cassia might have feelings for Ky. Ky is also an aberration, so he can't be with anyone ever. Cassia is caught between two great guys, and doesn't know which way to go. I don't know which way I want her to sway, but if I were her, I would consider that Ky is mysterious, and she has a ton in common with him, and he also knows about the poems. On the other hand, Xander is her best friend, and is really cool, and loving to her; he is also her match. She has a tough decision to make.

I think that the most important conflict that is the book (which is also a David and goliath type thing) is between cassia and the society because their conflicts include the time when she saw KY’s face on her micro card, when she accidently crushed xander’s compact, when her grandpa had given her the poems, when she had started to learn cursive, when she had kissed xander, while she is falling in love with KY. The most important conflict in the book is Cassia against the society. Everyone is supposed to follow by their rules and not do wrong. Cassia, on the other hand, does not like how the society and officials control every aspect of her life. She loves Xander, but she also loves Ky, and she doesn’t like how she can only choose one so she tries to rebel against that while they’re in the woods. I think this is the right thing to do. I think Cassia has the ability to change her world in which she lives in. so, if she keeps on rebelling it could lead to something big.

I think the most important conflict in the book is that Cassia doesn’t know who to love. She’s battling with herself on following the rules of the society and staying with Xander , or going with what she thinks is true love and choosing Ky. Either way she knows someone will get hurt and there could be serious, life changing, consequences that go along with her decision. If it were me, I would follow my heart. The main idea of Matched is wether or not the Society messed up on purpose or accident with Cassia's match. Is it Xander, or the mysterious Ky who popped up on her micro card that was suppose to be about Xander's life information. This is important because Cassia is falling in love with Ky who isn't even her match, as far as she knows, while Xander is falling in love with her. This issue is brought up a lot in this book, like when she went hiking with Ky she got jealous of him talking to another girl while she is suppose to be worried about only Xander. Or how everything makes Cassia think of Ky, she can't help but wonder what he thinks of her or what he's doing at that moment. I think Cassia would rather be with Ky because she wants to learn more about him and his past, like how he knows everything he does or where he came from. Because of his mysterious yet exciting personality, she cant help but fall in love with him.

I would say the main theme of the book, Matched, is that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, because you never know what you'll find on the inside. I believe this because Ky probably looks like a normal average Joe, but he is an aberration, with tons of mystery. Cassia, for instance, is a normal teenage girl, on the outside. She is full of secrets: she had poems that she wasn't supposed to have, harbors feelings for someone she shouldn't have them for, and is having second thoughts about the community. These people have two sides to them, so you can't judge by what they look like on the outside.

Chaunte, yes, everyone has secrets. But if you remember, Cassia has been feeling guilty about those secrets and wants to tell people. She burned the poems because she was guilty. Ky is a aberration, yes, but it's not his fault.Everyone looks like "the average Joe" on the outside. Everyone has two sides to them. I myself have two sides of me. I can be nice and I can be a complete jerk. I'm assuming you have the same two sides.

I wasn't saying it is a bad thing. I was trying to say that they're bad people or anything like that. What I was attempting to say was that if someone doesn't seem interesting, then chances are you're probably wrong about that, and they might be full of excitement and/or mystery.

The main theme that I can see in this book is to never truly lose sight of who you are. With all of the people seeming to be artificial you should still do What you love to do No matter what. You should never stop doing What you love because then you'll lose sight of yourself. Now if I liked this book or not is kind of a bit..Well..to be completely frank I did not enjoy this book. Mostly the reason is because when I picked it you and read the beginnings of it I thought Cassia was going to destroy the society because she wished for freedom. Instead I find its just a love triangle which I'm not too interested in.

I believe that the theme of Matched is that nothing is ever truly what it seems to be. Cassia thought that the society was failing and that the system wasn't perfect. It turned out that it had all been planned and she was part of an experiment to determine how effective the matching system really was. Cassia is an oddity in the fact that the two people she could be matched with both live in her Burrough. Even though she has a match the society gave her a choice which is another theme for the story you always have a choice. She has a very difficult choice because of the games the society decided to play.

The theme of Matched is that you should do what you want within reason and that a society shouldn't control you. I know in previous comments I've said to do as you're told. I stand by that 100 percent. I think the rules are there for a reason. Cassia shouldn't cause herself to stick out. It's always better to stay under the radar. I don't think that Cassia would want to get cited for anything and then dishonor her family and friends. I think she should continue with Xander. I really love this book so far and I can't wait to see what happens. I'm going to predict that the society breaks apart and that everyone can do as they please. I think that Cassia will end up with Ky and Xander has secretly been in love with someone else the whole time and ends up with her. I hated when Cassia got rid of those poems. They were from her grandfather they were special. I wish she would have kept them for her own sake. I understand why she didn't and I respect her for that. But at the same time, I wish she would have hidden them away and read them every now and then. I can't wait to finish this book. It's very interesting reading about the future and how it works for Cassia.

Madison D, I agree with you. I also wanted Cassia to stay with Xander because I think they were meant to be. I loved when they were matched with each other in the beginning. Although her love for Ky grew stronger, I think eventually her and Xander will find each other again.

I think the theme of matched is to not let anything control you like the society controls Cassie and everyone else. Everyone should be allowed to pick who they want to marry and what job they will do.Cassie is the main character and usally does what the society tells her to and trusts in them. She has been matched with her best friend Xander but, finds out she was originally supposed to be matched with another boy in her city named Ky. She couldn't be matched with Ky because he is suppose to stay single. Now Cassie is starting to have feelings for Ky and not Xander. She doesn't know what to do and is starting to not trust in the society so much. She wants to leave and run away but that would mean leaving all of her friends and family. I predict that Cassie will end up with Ky at the end and they will eventually run away.

I agree with you on the fact that she had chosen KY. It only makes sense that she would have chosen KY. She would not like being told who to love even if she does love xander. Anyone would have chosen KY over xander

Jordan H, I agree with you on the topic of the society controlling everyone and everything. I also think that everyone should be able to do what they want. While there are a lot of upsides to this society, I hate that they choose, and control everything. In this society, everything is an experiment and a prediction.

“Love is stronger than all things” Is the theme of the book matched. It is important to the plot of the book is because it is about a girl who is told to love somebody and she does live him. But then she falls in love with someone who no one is able to love and then she must choose between one love and safety or one love and risk everything. I had not gotten far enough to get to the point where she had chosen her true love but I guess that she had chosen the more risky love.

I agree with Mark. Throughout the whole book Cassia proved with all the obstacles that she went through that love is the strongest power of all. She went through so much pain and she did it all with her love for Ky pushing her through it.

I think the theme is “Love comes first” because Cassia and Ky risked everything because they were in love. This theme is important to the book because it made everything happen the way it did. Cassia would have made different choices if it weren’t for her love for Ky. Ky teaching Cassia how to write is a good example of the importance of this theme. A lot of bad consequences could have come out of that risky decision if they were to get caught. Also, Cassia risked her match and best friend, Xander all because of her feelings for Ky.

i agree with Jaydn. Cassia knew what she was doing but she did not care. she was only focused on her love for Ky. she knew bad things could happen because of it but, she still did it despite what the society or anyone else said.

I agree with Jaydn, that is the best theme because this whole book is based upon who Cassia is really in love with and what she will do to keep that going. How the society made her make a life changing decision knowing what she would do and that she would risk everything just to be free and happy with the one she loves, even if it means loosing one of her best friends.

The theme is “follow your heart.” I think this is the theme because throughout the whole story Cassia was trying to follow her heart and not her head. She followed her heart when she fell for Ky instead of Xander. She knew that technically Xander was her “match” but, she was actually in love with Ky. She knew it was against the rules of the society but, she followed her heart and spent time with him and did things she knew she wasn’t supposed to. This is important to the book because the whole story was Cassia v.s. the society, and by failing in love with Ky she was going against the society.

I would recommend students to read Matched if they are into love stories and exciting action about the world set in the future full of mysteries. In Matched, Cassia is put in a difficult situation with the Society (government) and how they control everyone's decisions and choices of life. Also her love life in falling apart when the Society "accidentally" gives her a match but later on realizes that may not be her real Match. Cassia must make a life changing decision changing her whole entire life forever, its either the dangerous free choice or the safe unhappy choice. To find out you must go read this book! you wont regret it.

If I were asked to recommend a book to someone, I would recommend Matched. It is a great book, and I wasn't bored once. I felt like I could talk to Cassia, Xander, and Ky, because they seemed like they could be real. I've actually already told my big sister about it, and I think she is going to read it. I plan on reading the other two, Crossed and Reached.
