I have to say I just might have to read this book next. The way Ms. Walters and some of the students have talked about this book during class, has made this book sound really good. I think I will like it because I like dogs. I have read what people have been saying on here about it and so far I like how the book flows.

  5. This book was really good because i like animals, so having a dog as the main character really made the book better. all about a little dog growing up, humans find the dogs and take them to a yard. alot of things happen in this book, i just started reading this book, half way in to it so im still reading on to see what happens more but so far a really good, interesting book!

this book is pretty good because its all about dogs. and i love dogs so its more interesting i guess. the dog loves his new life and couldn't ask for anything better. i wish that the people wouldn't of taken the 3 dogs though so they could just live the life that they were comfortable living. other than that the book is cool. i hope there's a second book on the way.

The setting of this book in the beginning effects how the main character views people and the world they live in. At first the main character is scared of humans because he lives in the woods and is a stray, but when the main character gets caught by people, he’s shy at first but realizes that people aren’t so bad. My reaction if I had to adapt to the environment would be very different from the main characters. If I was born and raised in the woods with a mother who was terrified of people, I’d be scared of them too. Seeing people for the first time would be scary because they are much different from all the animals you would be used to in the woods.

I agree with Morgan at the fact that the dog is afraid of people at first. He then warms up to people and learns to like them. If I were lost in the woods with my mother who hated people, I would be afraid of them too at first. It would take me some time to get use to them. Otherwise, I think I would be okay.

The book is told by the dog’s perspective and completely changes in just a short amount of time. In his short time of being alive, he’s already lived in three places. His first place of living was in a creek with his mom and three siblings as wild dogs. When they were picked up by kennel owners, they were brought to a veterinarian and kept in what was known as the Yard. When the Yard was shut down the dogs went to another kennel but later escaped, and roamed the streets for a few hours. There he was picked up by another stranger, but only to be left in the car to die. Luckily a woman comes over and breaks the window and keeps the dog as her own. The dog was introduced to his new forever family in a nice neighborhood. The setting of his youth made him a worried and scared dog about being left, but he was loved a little which caused him to have a lot of love to share. My reaction to this situation would be the exact same as the dogs.

The setting in this book so far has taken place in two separate places with two different atmosphere’s that directly effect the dogs in the story. The first environment was a dog-ran ‘pact’ in the confines of an over-crowded back yard. The conditions were somewhat poor and it was a fight (literally) to maintain status. Therefore, Toby had a fight or flight mentality and he always had to keep a guard up. His thoughts we’re revolving around what there was to do, who to play with and who to avoid. His actions we’re also more primal and dog like with lack of structure. His behavior was also this way. Contrary, when he was reborn into a family he lived, thought and behaved on a schedule and more civil fashion; revolving around the family as opposed to him.

The effect of the setting on the first feral-born pack dog was evident in his thoughts, actions and choices: he saw himself as part of a whole (pack) rather than an individual, let alone himself. He (Toby) acted out of primal instinct and mimicry. Lastly, his choices were based on the quick rationalization. Contrary, his suburban dwelling reincarnation acted in favor/command of humans, had a sense of self, and thought, as well as decided, more insignificant things that were not longer life-staking. My reaction to dealing with these environments would probably be the same as this character; I would likely adjust like him.

The setting has changed throughout the beginning of the book because the dogs have had different owners and places to live in. The first setting, the dogs and their mother lived outdoors until they were picked up by a truck that took them to the Yard. There were a lot of different dogs who lived there and the dog family had to get used to the small, crowded yard that kept growing. All of the dogs had to leave and go to a different kennel because the owners were no longer able to keep them. They were sent to a dog pound where they later escaped out of. The next setting, Toby was found by a man who kept him in his car where he was dying in until a lady came and broke him out of the car. She decided to keep Toby and bring him home to her family where Toby found his best friend who loved and cared for him. Toby's name later got changed to Bailey. The dogs must have felt overwhelmed and nervous because they had to keep moving to different places and having different owners that they didn't know. My reaction would be the same as the dogs because I would think it would hard to adjust to everything.

I agree with you about how it would be hard to adjust to a new place each time. I disagree with only one thing, the main character dies after each life and is reincarnated into a different dog each time. When their in the pound, they don't escape, they were killed, and that's when Toby was reincarnated as Bailey.

This book has so far taken place at a farm where they have been brought to, he feels apart of a family(pack) rather than a individual. it doesn't just show the mind and thoughts of one dog it goes through multiple life's and thoughts of of other dogs, so you can see what there going through at this time. but to me this book feels like its just gonna get better and better. this books puts so many images in your head of whats goin on. and you have no clue whats gonna come next unless you skip ahead.

The character has been acting up at home because he is a dog and has to stay by himself with the cat when Ethan is at school and Ethan's mom is at work. Bailey the dog's behavior has been bad because he is bored when he has no one to play with. He is opening the door from the garage and broke into the house to find food. Bailey and the cat jumped on the counters and found food they tore into. The dog played with the mom's shoes and he got in trouble when they got home. Bailey doesn't know what is right and what is wrong yet so he keeps getting punished for the things he is doing. I would suggest that the family gets another dog so Bailey has someone to play with so he doesn't keep entertaining himself.

I agree with Kristina that Bailey’s behavior has been bad because he is bored and has no one to play with. He just wants to go out and do something and have a little bit of fun. Playing with moms shoes is one thing he can think about doing for fun when he breaks into the house. Climbing onto the counters is another thing he just doesn't know what not to do. He wants to explore the house as much as possible while no one is home.

In this book, the dog goes through multiple lives and has multiple personalities, one of the characters the main character meets is a man named Jakob. Jakob is a lonely man who is also a police officer working in the search and rescue department. He was never really happy when he did this job with the main character, now a girl dog named Ellie, and everyone knew that. I disagree with how he acts because he was strictly business and didn’t allow himself to get too attached to Ellie. Instead of holding on to the past and being upset about it, he should have given the main character the love and affection she wanted along with helping her realize the difference between happiness through work and happiness through human affection. I suggest he give Ellie more love and affection.

The dog Bailey has been through a tough life. Now that he has died and been reincarnated, he is now Ellie the female police dog. She has been two handlers now. The first handler was shot while saving a young girl from being kidnapped. After she saw what had happened, she is being sad and can tell by the way the other officers act that something awful has happened. Luckily the second handler took Ellie. Her emotion to this new change is positive and likes the way the new handler treats her. If I were in the same place as Ellie, I would have a positive attitude on the situation.

Wendi lived in an apartment and got an eviction notice from her landlord due to Bear’s ( the dog) excessive barking, therefore she took her into her mother’s house where the negligence was high end and the in environment was unsafe, unsanitary and full of spite and bitterness. Lisa, Wendi’s mom, rarely cared for Bear and he received no love. Victor was hostile and abusive; he took Bear in the trunk and threw him out in the middle of nowhere. I disagree with his actions because though the responsibility of a dog is hard work, you shouldn’t neglect/abuse an animal and abandon them to fend for themselves. It puts a pit in my stomach. Bear was confused and hopeless all because of these people. It hurt to read “but I didn’t think I was a bad dog”. Victor should’ve dropped him off at a shelter at the very least in in the greatest benefit of the dog.

If it were not for Victor dropping Bear off at the side of the road, he would not have fulfilled his purpose of bringing two people together in the end. Even though it was a rough way to get rid of the dog, it ended up with a great purpose.

I think the biggest conflict in the book is Ethan and Todd because they haven't been getting along their whole lives. Todd is a very destructive person ever since he was little and Ethan is just the opposite so they always disagreed with each other. Todd set Ethan's house on fire and beat up Bailey, the family's dog. My reaction to this was shocked because I never thought Todd would go that far and try to hurt Ethan and his family. Bailey tried his best to stop Todd from what he was doing and take him down. Luckily, Bailey got a hold of his leg and took his shoe off in the yard. Todd limped back to his house with a trail of blood and the police easily tracked him down. Todd went to court and confessed he was the one who set the house on fire. I think Todd hit rock bottom after Ethan told him he had no friends and that's why he acted up and took his anger out to get back at Ethan.

Todd and Ethan's relationship is a big conflict, and I agree that after Ethan told him he had no friends and that no one liked him, he went a little crazy and stopped caring about anything. I think Todd was very angry and was more than likely abused when he was a child and that’s why he was acting that way.

I agree with Kristina in the fact that Todd hit rock bottom, especially after Ethan told Todd he has no friends straight to his face. Luckily Bailey had been there that night and had the blood on his mouth to have the idea of a suspect. If it were not for Bailey, Todd would have never gone to court.

I think the most important conflict is the fact that the main character keeps trying to find out why he, and sometimes she, is being reincarnated. The main character is trying to find out what his purpose is in the world, and each time he thinks he has found out what his purpose is and won’t be reborn, he comes back as a different dog. It helps the plot because the reader knows that the dog’s journey isn’t over yet and it makes it more emotional for the reader. Without knowing why the dog is being reborn after each life, the plot seems to become more complicated for the main character.

Yes, the main character seems to become more confused and conflicted with each rebirth. I feel much sympathy towards his/her situation and wonder why the dog is being put through these responsibilities and pressure. It gets frustrating seeing her/his own self doubt when we as reader know he/she is very accomplished and well mannered.

The major conflict that the dog has encountered is being reincarnated and, figuring out why what his purpose is now to his new owner. He keeps getting a new owner and being put into the awful scenario when he is a puppy. This is important to the plot because, the dog has many new lives to live to try and figure out what his purpose is in each life. My reaction to the conflict is surprised that the dog has not yet found his purpose in his overall life. He has encountered so much in his life that he surly would've found his purpose.

I agree that the major conflict is the dog being reincarnated. He always comes back as a different dog, in a new place, and with a new owner and name each time. He had many lives and it should've been easy for him to find out his purpose, but he failed to find out what it was after each life. Its very surprising that he went trough multiple lives and learned so many things but didn't know what his purpose in life was.

I agree. I never though the purpose going to being complex and inter-related with the people. It was confusing and I had no clue what they could possibly say the dogs purpose in life was. he/she lived such dutiful, well acquainted lives with his/her owners and faced many experiences.

The conflict I consider most important, is the main character (varies through reincarnation) with him/herself. The conflict is finding his/her purpose in life. This is important to the plot because the plot itself is going through the lives of the dog to find and fulfill the purpose in which is being seeked. Once fulfilled, he/she can prosper in peace. My reaction was sometimes confused and frustrated, due to empathy because she kept being reborn, when she lived a dutiful life. But in the end, I felt relief and comfort in the situation because of the closure and contentment of Ethan’s passing and Buddy’s presence.

The theme of the book is everyone has a purpose in this world and you have to understand how to fulfill it. The dog realized his purpose in the world was to make the boy happy. After he died and reincarnated, his purpose was to be a police dog and help find people who are missing. This time when he reincarnated, he remembered his past life with Ethan and he remembered how he made the boy happy. He is trying to do the same with his new owner the police officer because he realized that his wife died and he has to try his best to do his job and make him happy. The way to make the police officer happy is to find the people that has gone missing. This is now the dog's purpose in life.

The main character is always trying to make his owner happy, he continues going through different lives trying to do what pleases his owner at the time. He will always remain more loyal to his first owner who showed him so much love and affection from the very first day they met. The main character is willing o do anything for his owner, and by doing find when she was Ellie, didn't make the officer as happy as she made the boy when she was Bailey.

The importance of the book is about finding your purpose in life. It may not seem like you have one at first, but as your life goes on there are more things that add up to the importance of your life. The dog has had several lives to try and figure out what his real purpose is in the whole book. He is reincarnated four different times to find his real purpose. He each lesson he learned in the previous life helped him with every new life. The little things he remembers as a puppy in each life keep him going to find his purpose.

Yes, by living you create the framework of your purpose. The dog had to live multiple lives to conquer certain things to in the end fulfill his/her purpose. You step up the ladder of fulfillment and only in the end do you fully achieve this. It takes time, confusion, effort.

A theme that is meaningful to me in this book is always be loyal to the ones who love you and have stuck by your side. In the book, the dog was always loyal to his first real owner, Ethan; he would always remember his life with the boy, even when he was a different dog. The theme is important to the book because in the end, if the dog hadn't been loyal to his first real owner, the ending wouldn’t have been the same. I think this theme is very meaningful because finding someone who is loyal and loves you so much, their willing to put their lives before their own, like Ellie when she took down the man in the forest, or Bailey when he attacked Todd to save his family.

    1. The dog’s loyalty is unconditional. Despite the ruthless conditions faced as Bear, he still trying to be a “good dog” and even though Jacob never showed affection, Ellie always tried to comfort. And when tragedy arises, Buddy stayed by Ethan’s side. Loyalty is a promise of being there and kind, regardless of the situation.

The most important and meaningful theme I identified implied by events is that of unconditional love. In the book, the dog's third reincarnation, Ellie, loved and gave her loyal companionship to Jacob, despite his lack of displaying/returning affection. Regardless of the given conditions, she loved her master. Lastly, Bailey gave her love to Ethan as he grew and changed. As Buddy, he stayed by his side even as his life slipped away from him. This is meaningful because it depicts how real love should be displayed; unconditionally. Love is love, and it is present in all conditions. This book does a good job showing this by examples.

This book starts with a family of stray dogs, who find a cave to play in. One day when they are walking about trying to find food some one comes and rescues them, and now they are in an animal shelter. The main character is Toby, he is the dog telling the story, he has stubby legs and a normal size body. He is a curious dog who like where he is. There is also his brother, we don't know the actual name of his brother but he calls him fast. He is called fast because he runs a lot and he is fast. Fast is a bit bigger than Toby, and he wants to be in a higher position in the pack then Toby. There is also Serona, the woman who is in charge of the rescued dogs, and Bobby and Carlos, they help Serona with the dogs.

The setting of A Dogs Purpose is in multiple places. The first life that the dog lives in starts in the outdoors with him and the rest of his family until they get taken by a truck to a kennel that is run by a lady and two other men. This kennel is full of other dogs and it was very different for the main dog and his family. Eventually, the family wasn't able to keep all the dogs and they were all taken to the dog pound. In the next story, he started out as a puppy, and was at a dog breeder until he escaped and was picked up by a man in his truck. he was later taken from the truck by a lady and she took him to her family's house where they would keep him as a pet. These settings may be important because they affect how the dog acts and the manner in which he lives. The main character is named Toby in the first story, and Bailey in the second story. In the story, it describes the colors he is, which changes, and his actions also show that he is always wanting to play and is a very energetic dog.

The setting of a Dogs Purpose changes throughout. The beginning starts in the outdoors near a creek but then the dog gets taken by two men to a kennel that is run by a lady and the two men that grabbed him. Later he is taken by a couple of men to a dog pound where they put him to sleep because he has a not treatable hurt leg. He then wakes up in a new life with a new mom at a dog breeder facility. He could remember everything from his past life and wanted to leave the facility so unlocked a door with his mouth and paws. He was then picked up by a guy in a truck and was locked in his car until a lady broke the window and took him. He now lives with them in a neighborhood in the late 1960s. The setting in the book is important because it effects how the dog acts in certain situations. The main characters in my book right now are the dog, who was named Bailey, and Ethan, a kid that owns him.

the settings of a dogs purpose changes alot. the start of the book is all outdoors and it tells you like the stuff about whats going on and what all is happening. the main charthers of the book are the dogs family, sister, hungary, he dies, and the mother. the main dog is not described alot. its mostly told in a narrative point if view so all of the charatization is directed towards the other dogs in the yard. with that being said the indirect charatization is mostly about other dogs and her/him explaining what each and every other dog is like. i think the setting is important because it will determain the feeling of the passage and how the dogs will react. say they were in a scary forest. thats going to induce scaryness on the reader. not only the reader, also the person in the book.

The setting of this book takes place in many different places. First he is a stray dog living in the wild. Then he passes away and awakes as a puppy and a breeder.
But then he finds anew home living with a boy. So there is all kinds of different places this dog travels through out his life. This creates many different effects and thoughts as you read the story. Also the setting helps create a better image for the reader. The main character of this story is a dog. His name changes through out his different lives. At first he is a dog named Toby. But in his next life his name is Bailey. Toby is a smaller dog with brownish hair and short legs. Bailey is a purebred Golden Retriever who is a goldish color. Also Bailey is much bigger than the dog in his past life. So both of his lives so far have been completely different.

The setting of A Dog’s Purpose starts off in the woods. The main character is a young puppy that lives with his brothers, sister, and his mother. They all are wild, and they hunt and do whatever they need to survive. Fast and Hungry are the main character’s brothers. He refers to Fast as that name because Fast has the longest legs and was simply the fastest. The main character calls Hungry by that name because he was always hungry and just very lazy. Mother is, of course, the protector of them all. She teaches them all the skills they need, but slowly let them learn to do it on their own.

There is an internal conflict in my book between the main character, a dog, and himself. The book has three different stories so far in which the dog dies in a life then wakes up as a puppy in another life. The dog believes that he keeps coming back to life as a new dog because he has a purpose that he needs to fulfill. His first life was not very long and he didn't find a purpose then, but in his 2nd life he believed his purpose was to comfort and to make his owner happy. Then when he dies and comes back again he realizes that wasn't his main purpose. He has now determined that his purpose for the third life is to find and save people as a search and rescue dog. This he thinks maybe is overall purpose but i have not gotten far enough to know if he is right.

The internal conflict in this book is, of course, this dog trying to find his purpose in life. Why he is here, and what he is ment to do, especially because he was reincarnated as a golden reviver he feels that in his first life he did not accomplish a purpose in life. He later gets adopted by a family and the dog is the pet to the boy, Ethan, who is 8 at the time when they first adopt the golden retriever and Ethan names him Bailey. The external conflict right now is Bailey trying to behave well. He is still a puppy when Ethans family first adopts him but Bailey eventually what things make him a good dog and a bad dog.

the dog in the yard is very sad. the yard has been seized and the, id assume that is was some ind of fedreal agencie that has come and taken all the doggies. the internal conflict is that the dog keeps dieing and popin up into other dogs. like he was put down in the yard, then wakes up as a golden retreiver. like the story is alittle bit hard to follow but when i started reading it it started making more sence.

  34. The conflict that recently occured in my book is very upsetting. A neighbor named Todd set Ethans house on fire. Causing Ethan to jump from a 2 story window. He ended up breaking his foot. This is upsetting because Ethan just recently recieved a full scholarship from Michigan State University to play football. The neighbor Todd has always been kind of weird. Even in the story when the children were growin gup he had always acted strange. When the fire department showed up at the house they knew right away it was arson. And Bailey the dog saw Todd setting the house on fire so he bit him. So Todd ran home bleeding. So all the police did was follow the blood trail to Todds front door. Later he confessed to the arson. This made Bailey a hero.
